Making difficult decisions is what makes us and our business stronger. The two possible outcomes of our decisions need not be good or bad, just different. In fact, making no decision at all and plodding on with strategies that don't work is often the downfall of a business.
For example, if you've submitted bids for public sector contracts in the past without success, you may have concluded this was not the right business development strategy for your business. You could re-visit tendering for UK Government contracts (as a new business strategy in 2021) but this time, hire a bid writing professional to assist you in the tender writing process. This could make the difference between winning and losing the tender.
I know what you're thinking "how can I plan when there is so much uncertainty". Well plans change, they are not set in stone, you can change your plans at any time.
So how do I start making plans?
When you make plans, always write them down. Start with your overall goals that you want to achieve in the short, medium and long term. This could mean what you want to achieve this week, this month and this year. Once you have set your goals, the next step is to work out how you are going to achieve those goals.
You can choose for example, I am going to avoid looking at social media sites for a week. After a week of no social media, assess how you felt about that. Did it help you to achieve your goal? Were you more productive, less distracted? If your experience was positive, you may want to consider another week without social media. The process of evaluating the results you achieve and assessing what was beneficial and what was not should be ongoing.
In summary, the hardest part of planning is starting to plan. Also, be careful not to over plan e.g. spend too much time planning and not enough time putting those plans into place.
